This is a second video I’ve created to mark the 20th anniversary of my novel 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous. It’s a more personal video as it includes many family photographs from when I was a boy, growing up on an isolated farm in New Zealand.
Re-reading and editing the novel to produce the new 20th anniversary ebook editions was really fascinating for me. There were so many small details that I had forgotten and little glimpses of what life was like back in 1970s New Zealand. In this age of personal mobile phones, I’d completely forgotten that my family used to share a phone line with two neighbouring families – and so we could not make a call if the neighbour was using the phone.
But the novel is filled with small incidental detail like that which will probably seem quite outlandish to today’s contemporary reader.
